biacc book club!!

In an attempt to raise much needed funds, some of those loyal players, fans and officials associated with BIACC have taken to the literary word to swell the coffers. Titles now available include:

Herschel and Me – Andrew Walker – the touching tale of the unlikely friendship between the modern day cricketing legend and……some South African bloke.

Merv and Me – Phil Atkinson -on a similar theme to Drew’s effort this tells of the association between Phil and Australian legend Merv Hughes. For the value-conscious please note that this is a much slimmer volume than Drew’s.

Its only a game lads! – Ed Payne – Ed explains his theory on how to keep calm on the cricket field. Contains a foreword by Brendan White.

****ing Cricket – Julie White –Julie talks in her own words about her long struggle battling the effects of Tourettes Syndrome. Contains strong language.

Too Many Chiefs – Bret Garbutt – Bret sets out his plans to take over the chairmanship of the club and ultimately the world.

A few works that take their titles from famous films….

10 – Dave Boylan – Dave goes in to great detail about his famous innings against Saxton in 2010. There are 30 chapters in total dedicated to the day, including 1. Getting Up; 2. Boxers or Y fronts; 3. A hearty breakfast etc. Good value but hard going at times!!

I am Legend – Andrew Swires –Sorry ther is nothing to back this up.

A Few master classes…

Batting by numbers – Ridders –includes details of some of his more famous batting strategies including ‘block block swing’, ‘block swing’, and of course ‘go down swinging’.

Wicket celebrations – Henry Swires – a master-class in the wicket celebration including how to celebrate like some of the greats like Monty Panesar; Brett Lee and of course Henry himself.

Spin, Guile and Flight – How to take wickets without any of these skills – Nick Briggs

How to Sledge – Mike White –includes the classic …on being hit for four ‘fair enough mate, nice shot, but calm down you are still ugly’ and other classics.

On a slightly different note, you will be delighted to learn of the long awaited launch of Dave Meek’s warm up and fitness video. This is available in both VHS and Betamax with running time of 4hrs 20. This is a real-time exercise regime that walks (literally!) you through Meeky’s warm up on the morning of the match. Reasonably priced at £4.99 please watch out for the £25 delivery charge. This is unavoidable as the pack contains a 6ft length of picket fence, an industrial size tub of equine liniment, and 4 metres of elasticated bandages.

Other Titles available….

My Life in Business – The Del Boy Years by Tom Walker

Lawn Mower Maintenance for Dummies – Dennis

Its Not Bl**dy Ginger its Auburn – Henry Burton.

Please support the excellent work of these authors

Thanks

Rain = no cricket

The recent weather has caused great upset to cricket across the nation not only the Wetherby League. BIACC seconds in particular have been hard hit by the frequent heavy showers that have led to the games being called off well in advance. The home pitch drains beautifully following the extensive drainage works carried out in 1947 however even her state-of-the art engineered drainage sub base has struggled with the  heavy deluges. The fact that many of the clubs finest young stars have yet to swing a bat in anger has caused great upset.

With long range forecasts predicting more unsettled weather the BIACC action committee has carried out a feasibility study into possible solutions. Traditionally known as a forward thinking club, the latest proposal, know as the ‘Mega Cover’ is likely to make waves amongst the establishment.

THE PROPOSAL: the ‘Mega Cover’ is a free floating, light weight cover manufactured from the latest technology in synthetic coverings. Suspended by helium balloons and anchored at key points around the ground, it provides total weatherproofing to the outfield and square allowing uninterupted play. (see figure 1 below)

The ECB has apparently picked up on the design and is carrying out an independent study in to the financial long term feasibility of the ‘Mega Cover’.

The 2012 Season is nearly here…

After a long dark winter BIACC is now preparing for its biggest season in decades

The pitch is in pristine condition thanks to the efforts of the ground staff. The strategy to remove worming from the Autumn maintenance programme has paid dividends, with a carpet like wicket, free from worm debris and crow splatters.

Total domination of the second division last season means the firsts are now playing with the big boys. Shadwell away is a massive opener to the season. BIACC talent scouts have secured key signings to bring additional firepower and depth to the squad. However, will the step up in the level of cricket also mean a step up in the quality and range of teas on offer?

The second XI can look forward to a long summer of cold pizza, a wide range of sandwiches and cocktail sausages, some weekends may also produce scotch eggs and samosas. It is important to remember that a tea is not complete without a cake or two and importantly fresh produce such as melon or grapes to refresh the palette. Either side of teas they will be playing ‘total cricket’ with a big hitting mentality and a catch completion rate of at least 42%.
